The Italian Association of Internal Medicine (Società Italiana di Medicina
Interna, SIMI) was established in 1887, making it the oldest existing Italian medical society. The
objectives of the Association, as set out in its charter, are to provide opportunities for
continuing medical education, to organize scientific, cultural, practical and social events
pertinent to internal medicine, to offer fellowships for talented young researchers, and to promote
and fund scientific research.
With the development of annual programs coherent with its charter, SIMI achieves its
objectives through the:
a) Organization of conferences, seminars, research studies, round table discussions and
courses for all levels of training
b) Publication of periodicals and occasional reports for its membership (and not only)
c) Support and promotion of scientific activities organized in collaboration with national
and regional agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Instruction, University and
Research, the Italian Regions, local healthcare systems and other national and European
associations and governmental institutions whose scopes and aims are similar or complementary to
those of SIMI.
